Dr Riwaj Dhakal's research and teaching interests are in geotechnical engineering, with a focus on earthquake engineering problems such as soil liquefaction and seismic assessment of soil-structure systems. His research profile includes several journal articles (including one that won the presitgious Otto Glogau Award) and conference papers illustrating his expertise in liquefaction assessment using simplified, laboratory, and advanced numerical modelling methods, and he is one of the leading NZ researchers in understanding the seismic hazard of Wellington's reclaimed land and infrastructure at the port. In collaboration with Professor Cubrinovski, Dr Dhakal has also developed a simplified procedure for estimating liquefaction-induced settlement of buildings as part of his postdoctoral research fellowship.
