Dr. Riwaj (Ribu) Dhakal is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of British Columbia Vancouver. He was the top graduate in 2018 for the Bachelor of Civil Engineering with honors program at the University of Canterbury (New Zealand). He graduated with a PhD in 2022 with joint supervision between the University of Canterbury (New Zealand) and the UC Berkeley (USA). His primary research and teaching interests are in geotechnical engineering, with a focus on earthquake engineering problems such as liquefaction assessment using simplified, laboratory, and advanced (nonlinear dynamic analysis) methods, investigating seismic behavior of shallow and deep foundations, and material and site characterization of soil. Dr Dhakal has also developed a simplified procedure for estimating liquefaction-induced settlement of buildings.
